You might be missing the point, Garmin…

It’s been a rough summer; with three crashes, two of which have taken me off the bike for unwelcome lengths of time… I don’t like seeing that “detraining” notice any less than anyone else, but honestly, I also appreciate the honesty. And while it totally sucks seeing it there, taunting me, not seeing it is worse. I didn’t go all-in to have my devices go dark, hiding something that is clearly happening.…

Garmin fēnix 6 goes to 11, err… 11.10

Take couple slow days and BOOM, there’s another update to the Garmin fēnix 6. Love it! I’ve actually been running the RC with zero issues for about a week, so I think it’s totally safe to plop this guy on the watch and enjoy the new features. The  Unfortunately, there’s no direct download link on the forums, so you’ll have to use Garmin Express if you want to force it officially. But…

Huh? I thought that feature was perfect already….

I’ve complained about Garmin’s FTP calculator before; both here, and on the Garmin forums. Of course, no one from Garmin had anything to say about it, but the community was pretty clearly in one of three camps: “[blindly] accept the [flawed] truth it gives you”, “if you don’t like it, turn it off”, “nothing’s wrong, move along”. Interestingly, it does appear that there was something to the complaint though, as is acknowledged…

Maybe wait a bit for the marketing emails, Garmin.

It could just be me, but I find it super annoying that whatever system Garmin uses to send out marketing emails, has come back up before they have Garmin Connect fully working again. This is the second email I’ve received trying convince me that I really ought to buy a Venu since they experienced a total system failure last week. As someone who works in IT, I totally get that different teams…

Garmin is back, kinda…

It was a hellofa bender, but after four days of hard partying, Garmin is back online. Well, sort of, they still have a a massive hangover, or at least that’s what it looks like because while they’re “online” many systems are only partially active. Given that the word on the street is that their “bender” was actually ransomware, it could be a while before everything is fully operational, and we learn the…

I’m Giving Her All She’s Got Capt’n

Garmin is down, hard down, like something really bad happened in a data center somewhere down. Probably not the best time to talk about distributed cloud services, but seriously Garmin, we should probably have that conversation at some point ;). UPDATE: Forbes is reporting that it’s possible that Garmin is dealing with a ransomware attack. If that is the case, could be down for a long, long time……

Garmin approaches modernity

One of the biggest complaints I have about Garmin bike computers (OK, everything), is that the setup experience is decidedly stuck in in a different era. In this prehistoric time, mobile phones are not ubiquitous, and no one has the context to understand that you shouldn’t have to start over every time you get a new head unit, or hard reset because the Internet only exists on college campuses and the nightly…

Another use case for the Garmin Varia

I love my Garmin Varia. It’s a massively helpful bit of magic that enhances my perception of safety on the bike because I know when there’s a car behind me, and in a broad sense how fast it’s approaching. Given this information, and with all the solo riding I’ve been doing lately, I recently discovered another great use case for the device. Motopacing. Standard T&C apply (i.e. probably not the safest thing,…

Working around Garmin’s intransigence

In general, I’ve been really pleased with my fēnix 6, but Garmin’s unwillingness to properly merge data recorded on other platforms/devices remains a massive annoyance. Fortunately, I’ve figured out a work around; which as stupid as it is that I need to do this, turns out it works pretty well. The “solution” should have been obvious to me at the time, but blinded as I was by the pink-fog-of-disbelief, it wasn’t. Simply…
