Garmin launches Enduro 3, almost like a fēnix 8 but cheaper and less pretty

I was still recovering from the Garmin crazy town that is the fēnix 8 when I stumbled across DCR’s Enduro 3 video; which dropped this morning. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t get what Garmin is doing here.

The Enduro 3 is essentially a 51mm fēnix 8 solar ($1,200), with no microphone/speaker and no diving capability (meh), for a $900. Oh, and it’s less pretty. The get here is more battery life. 12 hours in All Sat Systems adventure mode, and a lot more depending on how much sun you get, and how crazy you want to expedition. That’s cool and all, but how many people are going to use that? The SKU count at Garmin has to be driving up the R&D and logistics costs for all of their devices. Maybe this is intended as a halo device? I like big battery life, and I cannot lie? I was interested, academically of course, until I saw that it was 51mm only. Unfortunately, even the 47mm is a stretch on my boyish wrists. Alas, no loss…
