Reviews and good numbers are hard to find on many stock wheels, with good reason. This is an attempt to fix that with respect to the Giant S-X2 disc wheelset that comes with many Giant Revolt bicycles.
Getting old sucks, might as well have a nice bike
Thanks. I was hoping to get info on weight. I’m planning to upgrade to DT Swiss GR1600. I agree they roll well and I plan to keep them. I’ll probably keep slicks on these wheels (commuting and training rides) and knobbier tires on the new set for gravel Fondo events. Another thing I noticed right away is that I don’t think Giant’s wheel building is great with respect to the spoke tensioning. My wheels were slightly out of true before I even rode the bike.
I ended up getting a set of DT Swiss ER1400 Spine, and a set of Farsports gravel wheels for the bike (working on reviews for both). Considered the GR1600, but the weight put me off.
I currently have a giant toughroad 2020 TOUGHROAD SLR GX 1 and it has the s-x2 wheel set. Do you know if it’s possible to upgrade the casette on the wheel set to an 11 speed cassette? i been looking everywhere and can’t find the answer.
Yes. I use an 11 SPD cassette with it.
Could you clarify this a bit more. There are HG-L and HG-M freehubs. The HG-M take up to 11 speed MTB cassette but only up to 10-speed road cassetes (with the exception of two specific 11-speed cassettes CS-HG800 and CS-HG700). Only the HG-L can go up 12 speed road cassettes. So are these hubs HG-L (outer length 36.75) or HG-M (outer length 34.9)? If your 11 speed is not one of the 2 exceptions above then, it should be HG-L. I would to know how much trouble it would be to upgrade the Revolt 2 to GRX 2×12 down the line.… Read more »
Sorry. It’s a standard sized 11 speed road freehub. A 12 speed road cassette should fit.
Super, thanks. The brands mostly don’t specify which hub their lower end 9 or 10 speed offerings use and both types of hubs are certainly available.
Thanks again
I should have mentioned that there appears to be a few different versions of this wheel floating around. I expect than anything newer than the version I have would have the same hub, but you never know.
Since you seem to know something about bikes, I was wondering what you think of the Cube Nuroad. The Pro (2×10) also uses the same frame and wheels as the higher models but is cheaper than the revolt 2 (€1200 vs €1400). I don’t know if it has a road hub though. There is also the even cheaper 8 speed basic model (€950) but for this one, the hubs are listed (Tourney level MTB type) and do not support road 12x and would have to be changed if I were to upgrade. With a full 2×12 GRX groupset incl brake… Read more »
I don’t know much about Cube bikes, but they do look like a good value for money. Without looking at (or riding) a Cube, it’s really hard for me to comment on potential quality differences. They review well, and I haven’t seen any complaints about them. Having owned an Revolt 2, I can comment there. It was a really solid bike. Well built, no complaints around quality.
Hi. I’m thinking of buying a secondhand Giant SX2 Wheelset for my GT Hybrid. Can you use a 9 speed cassette with it? Thanks.
The Revolt that the wheels came with was equipped with 9 speed Shimano Sora, so I would expect that it should work fine.
Hello, can i put tyres 700x280mm on these wheels? I have this wheel with 700 x400mm tyres and I would like to put on thinner tyres: I’m thinking 700×280….thanks. claudio
Yes. As long as you keep the pressure under the min for the rim (IIRC, 85PSI), you’ll be fine.
Thanks for reviewing these , a few questions if you can help
any idea what the max weight limit is for these ? Could I bikepack on them for instance ?
Can I run a regular tyre with a tube or is it tubeless only?
Do you know what I should expect to pay for them second hand ,Have seen a set on auction on ebay, thanks
I’ve read that the weight limit for the Revolt is 300lb. I don’t know if Giant publishes a weight limit for these wheels, but I think you’d be fine bikepacking with them.
You can run tubes, or not. Your choice.
I wouldn’t know what a fair price would be. Guessing, maybe $150-200?
Thanks for the help
These rims are on Toughroad which has a weight limit of 160 kg total. @28 spokes
Just note that the Giant SX2 wheels are upgraded in 2021. I just bought Giant (Liv) Devote 2 and alhough the wheels are labeled SX2, they are different to the model reviewed here. They seem to be much wider rims 622x25mm and I do not notice any wobble in the freehub….
Thanks!
Do you know which bearing do they have – sealed or not?
Thanks for this. Do you know how much just the sx2 rims themselves weigh?
Sorry, I don’t.
Hello, can I use Sram Red etap 11, mechanical, on a gravel bike, Giant Revolt 2, 2022? Thank you, greetings
You should be able to any road groupset on the Revolt. I use Ultegra on mine. The only thing I can think that might be an issue is if you want to run a large chain set. It’s possible that you might have an issue because of the chainstay width, but I haven’t looked into it. It’s not a problem with a 50, haven’t tried anything bigger but I think a 52 would fit fine.
Hi, what’s the internal rim width on those?
The version I have is 19mm. I’ve heard that Giant released an updated version of this wheel, but didn’t change the model number. I don’t know how accurate that claim is, but mentioning it just in case.
I was just learning about tubeless and my bike came with these wheels. I was hoping this would tell me if they were with or without hooks so I’d know how to buy tires in the future.
The set I have has hooks.
Hi,
I just bought a second hand cross bike for my son with this wheel set. Could you tell me what type of freehub this wheel has? (It needs to be replaced). Thanks!
If you need to replace the hub or driver contacting Giant is probably your best bet.
Hi!
I bought a second-hand Giant bike with this wheelset and I’m wondering what tires would be suitable as replacements. The reason I ask is that the rims themselves are described as tubeless by Giant, so I’m wondering if both regular and tubeless tires would work. My tires are oozing out sealant throughout, I think from having been driven with low pressure…
What would you recommend?
Thanks
You should be able to run almost any 700C tire on these. If you go really narrow, you will need to ensure that the max PSI of the rim isn’t lower than the min PSI of the tire.
I currently have a Grant FastRoad AR Advanced 2. The tires I currently install are Giant Gavia Fondo AR, tubeless, 700x40c. My wheelset is Giant S-X2 Disc wheelset, which can be installed on CONTINENTAL GP5000 AS TR 30C, 32C, 35C tubeless tires. tires?
What is the inner width of the rim? IIRC, mine are 19mm. In my case any of these tires will be fine as long as I don’t inflate them ovee the max for the rim (85PSI IIRC).
